In recent times, mobile devices have become quite powerful and feature rich and are getting attention from consumers and businesses alike. Faster processors, larger RAM and flash memories along with multiple communication technologies have made mobile devices suitable to deploy and run business applications. Such advancements are helping businesses embrace mobility to improve their processes thereby increasing revenues and efficiency, while lowering operational costs. Mobile device is an important component of any mobile solution. There are wide-varieties of mobile devices to choose from.
iPhone vs. SatNav: Another Device Bites the Dust for iPhone Users?

What is a SatNav? I would define it as a small pocket sized computer, with a built-in GPS receiver, running navigational software on a lightweight but efficient Operating System. Indispensable in today's age, but adding to the number of small technological marvels that need to be carried on your person. Unless you have a utility belt or do not worry about carrying a rucksack, then it won't be an issue.

Farewell Old Tech, Hello New Tech

It was only a matter of time, especially as with the SDK 3.0, developing for an accessory was made possible. Now within the next few weeks Apple Retail will withdraw the Symbol based devices running Windows CE and replace it with an iPod Touch based device with custom credit card reader. Is that a cheer I hear? I've always wondered when this will happen and initially the roll put will be in the US, but other countries will follow soon after.

Building Smartphone Apps

Smartphone apps are the most exciting trend in computing since the advent of web apps. How do you as a developer take advantage of this? More generally, how do you do that and get maximum reach for your app across the diversity of smartphones out there. If you’re writing a consumer app you can get away with just targeting the iPhone (albeit missing some market opportunity). If you’re writing a business app you need to be able to reach all the users in the enterprise. There just are no homogeneous mobile device environments in any place but the smallest mom and pop shops now.

How's Business Viewing Enterprise Mobility?

This is the second in a series of five initial articles, in which I'm going to put my thoughts and findings on the subject of Enteprise Mobility. For this article I've decided to tackle the way that Business is now viewing Mobility. This has definately changed over the last few years and has been caused by various factors.

Ulitzer Live! New Media Conference & Expo

I live 11 minutes away from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. Friday evening I took a Cessna Caravan for a short 45-minute flight to Martha's Vineyard. This was my first trip to the island. I didn't do any research and had false expectations based on my long-time love affair with the island of Cat Cay in the Bahamas. I found out that Martha's Vineyard was huge. Upon landing on the island, my pilot called a cab for me to take me to my hotel. According to the cab driver the island's population was around 30,000 off-season and well over 100,000 during its peak summer season. These numbers change drastically from driver to driver or whomever you ask, of course. As compared to three to six neighbors any time I go home to Cat Cay, this was an instant shock to me.

Is AT&T Apple's Achilles Heel?

There is no secret that I love my iPhone. I really do - I written several articles about how cool it is. So why am I thinking of getting rid of it. The answer: AT&T.

Bit-O history here. I was one of the first few idiots who purchased iPhone 1.0 the same week it came out. Yes, I shelled out $600. I thought it was a good deal as I was writing about the phone and could (in my head, not so much my wife's) justify the cost. I also had to purchase the $85/mth plan from AT&T. So, now it is over two years later and I still have the same phone and I am still paying $85/mth. And I want to stop paying the man.

The Role of Landscape in Film

For me, one of the attractions of going to the cinema to see a feature film is to experience visually, on the big screen, new places or worlds that one may never actually experience oneself. In many movies, these “places” are not always physical. They can include emotional or psychological places – say when a story concerns itself with themes such as unrequited love or mental breakdown for example. But here I am interested in the physical spaces that can be defined as the “landscapes” represented by the settings or locations portrayed in a film and how the use of landscape can be leveraged by screenwriters to add additional depth to a story or the situation that characters find themselves in.

Multi-Layers of Security Encryption Is A Mobile Enterprise Necessity

Today more than ever Multi-layers of security encryption is a Mobile Enterprise necessity. Lets face it, in work or our personal lives, when we leave a location we do not just shut and lock-up one lock, but we rely on maybe a secondary lock or security alarm system. We still even rely on the old faithful human security guard. Now that we are carrying around more and more personal & corporate data with us, we need to do the same and to be as vigilant.

No Money In Voice – Welcome 4G!

The last five years has seen unprecedented change in communications. The European consumer has a plethora of handset choices and packages. The average handset has evolved from the humble voice-box, to the total media centre. As a result thousands of start-up companies are profiting out of the sector’s advances, supplying the various add-ons which inevitably accompany any new wave of technology.

What To Do About iPhone Security Concerns

Two recent security scares regarding the iPhone have brought renewed attention to the iPhone readiness for business use. In one case Forbes.com author Andy Greenburg garnered a lot of attention with his " How to Hijack Every iPhone In the World " story. This describes an SMS exploit that will be exposed at the Black Hat CyberSecurity event in Las Vegas this week. "Researchers say they'll demonstrate how to send a series of mostly invisible SMS bursts that can give a hacker complete power over any of the smart phone's functions. That includes dialing the phone, visiting Web sites, turning on the device's camera and microphone and, most importantly, sending more text messages to further propagate a mass-gadget hijacking."

What is the Nirvana Mobile App?

With the release of Citrix Receiver for iPhone 1.02 including AG and RSA support, the ability to securely deliver any app, anywhere, is closer than ever to reality ( we already cover WinMo, Symbian and close to BlackBerry and Android ).

One question I have been pondering with Martin Duursma and few others on the team is what is next ? It's great we can get to all these other Windows and RIA apps, but the app many of us use most is email. The question is, what is missing from native iPhone email or Outlook ? What features would be most useful for a mobile app that we would use all the time from any device?

Boxing People In Could Be the iPhone's Undoing - Holiday Message to Steve Jobs

I’ve only got one thing I want to ask Santa Jobs for, and it ain’t a Red Rider BB Gun. All I want from Apple is a more open platform. Sure, the odds are slim as long as they remain dominant. That’s why I’m not asking them to completely open source the iPhone. I’m just asking them to crack the door and let the breeze in.

Another "Fair and Balanced" Leopard Article by Joe Wilcox and eWeek

My own personal install of Leopard seems to be having periodic trouble completing a shutdown on the 17' MBP. Annoying? Yes. Worthy of posting something inflammatory such as 'wrong with Leopard's spots'? Doubtful. So, in looking at eWeek's Microsoft Watch's latest article, I leave you with this parting thought: If it walks like a shill, acts like a shill, and smells like a shill....

Which One Is Better, iPhone or the Windows Smartphone?

I've been a big proponent of smartphone technology for a long time, and have been chasing the 'perfect smartphone' for a while. Specifically, I've been hooked on using Windows Smartphone devices, because of the seamless integration with Outlook and the resulting automatic synchronization of all my contacts, calendar entries, tasks, notes, and e-mail over the air. And my favorite Smartphone so far was the Cingular/AT&T 8525. To meet a new business partner on the road, enter their contact details into the smartphone, and find the same person automatically in Outlook when you get back to the office is simply great - same goes for calendar entries.

Can You Afford the iPhone Bill for International Data Roaming?

'They have periodic updates on their data files, and they translate into megabucks,' Levy said. 'This is akin to your bank having automatic access to your ATM machine and is siphoning money out during all times of the day and night without your knowledge.' Actually, no. Its nothing even remotely like that. Surely one can appreciate the man's anger, but statements like this indicate ignorance of how technology works. There is one single common thread here that you'll see. Here's a quote from another article that referred to the source article: Because the iPhone, according to this Newsday story, checks for service updates and email whether it's turned on or off.
