Today June 19, is the day that we will see if there will be a repeat of the same rush to own an iPhone 3G S, as previous releases of the iPhone experienced. Though initially, this will only be for the first phase of countries, US, Canada, France, Italy, UK, and Spain.
iPhone 3G S, is available in 16GB and 32GB flavors, which will retail in the US at $199 and $299 respectively, with the current 3G model available unchanged for $99 in the US. A very high percentage of users that already had the iPhone 3G, upgraded their devices two days ago when the iPhone OS 3.0 became available, so have been experiencing the new features in advance of today's iPhone 3G S users. Though the Speedier device should give an all round better experience, with its...
- faster processor
- higher internal memory
- higher spec camera
- new magnetometer (digital compass)
I have noticed in my region, the UK, a steady stream of iPhone 3G converts since the announcement at WWDC09 on Monday June 8. These are the folks that have not been 'drawn to the light', by the new iPhone 3G S specification, but by the reduced price, of what I will call the entry level iPhone... the iPhone 3G 8GB device, that can be instantly upgraded to OS 3.0. I will report back later on what I have seen today in the UK.
What is fact, is that todays release is a big event for the iPhone community. For them, today is a day to rejoice...
"The iPhone is dead.... Long live the iPhone!".
I believe that today's introduction will be the second hurdle cleared for the final phase of adoption into Enterprise businesses, leaving the track clear for the final sprint to the finish line, aided by companies such as Sybase. (Sybase, through its iAnywhere Mobile Office product, allows secure email & pim on the iPhone). Included with the iPhone 3G S is on device hardware encryption. The first hurdle was cleared when the iPhone OS 3.0 became available two days ago on June 17.
If you want to see Sybase iAnywhere Mobile Office in action, it will be shown at SYS-CON's iPhone Developer Summit on June 22-23, in the Roosevelt Hotel NYC.
