This week AT&T will be launching it's latest service, MMS, for the iPhone. The way it is being hyped in the media you would think that this was a really exciting an innovative new feature. Wow, you can send a video via text! OMG, ATT, my BFF.
Let's take a reality check here: other carriers have been offering MMS for years in the US. MMS is not new. Apple was criticized in 2007 for not included MMS, particularly when a camera has been included with the iPhone since day one. The reason why MMS has not been available, it turns out, is not Apple, but AT&T. But, September 25th if you have either a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS you will be able to send MMS messages.
I have a prediction: MMS for the iPhone will be plagued by problems. Remember, the "m" in MMS stands for Multimedia, files such as images, audio and video. These are files much larger than plain text. I mean, why should MMS for AT&T be successful when other services such as voice and 3G data are riddled with problems?
What are your thoughts? Will you be using the new MMS service with your iPhone or will use the Gentleman's Excuse Me and email your photos instead?
