WHITING, Ind., Nov. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Between the piles of presents, decadent decorations and massive meals, the high costs of the holiday season can make anyone feel like Scrooge. As a result, some people are considering postponing their celebrations a few days, or even a week, to save big-time green. A new CouponCabin.com survey reveals that more than one-quarter (29 percent) of those who celebrate Christmas are at least somewhat likely to consider postponing their celebration to a later date so they can save money. In addition, more than one-third (34 percent) of U.S. adults would consider waiting until January to do most of their holiday shopping in order to save money. This survey was conducted online nationwide by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from November 16th - 20th, 2012, among 2,324 U.S. adults aged 18 and older.
For some, postponing their holiday celebration can be a way to reduce the inevitable money anxiety associated with the season. Three-in-four (75 percent) are at least somewhat concerned with holiday expenses (buying gifts, entertaining, attending holiday parties) this year; furthermore, 19 percent are very concerned. Only one-quarter (25 percent) report not being concerned at all with holiday expenses this year.
Holiday money stress can sometimes mean struggling to keep bank accounts in the black. Four-in-ten (40 percent) are worried that they won't be able to make ends meet this season due to holiday expenses and nearly four-in-ten (37 percent) are worried that they will have a lot of debt after the holiday season is over.
"Financial worries are common for many people year round, and the holiday season can compound that anxiety," said Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings Officer at CouponCabin.com. "Sometimes, switching things up, like when holiday celebrations are held, can mean a smaller financial burden. To some people it might be unusual to change their celebrations, but for others, it can make sense to shift their plans if it means saving big bucks."
For some who celebrate Christmas, they feel it's practical to postpone their celebration. More than one-quarter (27 percent) said in regards to postponing Christmas, they would rather save their money for other essential items, like rent, utilities and bills. Twenty-four percent agree that postponing Christmas simply is a smart way to save money.
Many of those who celebrate the holidays are open to changes in their get-togethers. More than eight-in-ten (82 percent) U.S. adults report they are flexible when it comes to holiday celebrations. Nearly one-third (32 percent) said it doesn't matter what day their family and friends celebrates or exchanges gifts.
