iPhone 5 wrests the US smartphone crown back, A big weekend for Kindle and more

A new and improved 4″ screen highlights the iPhone 5′s offering

Here are the top mobile news and stories of the day.

  • iPhone wrests the US smartphone sales crown back from Android - Kantar Worldpanel ComTech has Apple as 48.1% of all smartphones purchased in the past quarter, with 46.7% Android. Apple obviously got a huge bump from the iPhone 5, but I think we will see similar results in Q4 because of the holiday. Via GigaOM, more here.
  • Lenovo’s P770 smartphone has a 29-hour battery life - Lenovo has released details on their new P770 smartphone. It comes with a 3,500mAh battery, as well as a dual-core processor and 4.5″ screen with 960 x 540 resolution. Here’s the rub, is that the low specs enable better battery life (as well the huge battery back). So if you care this much about battery life, you’ll find yourself giving up a lot in return.   • Outlook.com is now an app available in the Google Play Store - Microsoft released an Android application for their popular Outlook.com email service. However, with 1.9 stars average rating, it appears to be complete junk. Via Google Play Store, more here.
  • Rdio releases new iOS and Android apps with second-screen control - The must subscription serve Rdio recently updated iOS and Android applications with a totally revamped UI. Rdio users can now use their mobile devices to control playback on other devices. Via GigaOM, more here.
  • Amazon’s Kindle Family: Weekend Sales More Than Double On Last Year, Cyber Monday Biggest Of All - While Amazon never releases hard numbers on Kindle sales, they stated that last weekend was the most popular weekend of Kindle sales ever. While Amazon has possibly the best e-reader, the Kindle Fire (HD, etc) are not up to snuff with their competitors. Via TechCrunch, more here.
  • How Martin Odersky rewrote the rules of coding for a mobile world - Here is the story of Scala, the programming language that makes “parallelism” far easier. Scala helps scale and programming for applications of multiple OS’s and users. Via GigaOM, more here.
  • Google hustles Android 4.2.1 onto Nexus devices to give you December back - Google is hurrying to push Android 4.2.1 towards Nexus devices (Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, 7, 10). The lack of December is only one of a number of bugs afflicting Android 4.2.x. Via Engadget, more here.
