SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/28/13 -- To kick off Data Privacy Day #DPD13, TRUSTe®, the leading global provider of online privacy management solutions, today released its 2013 U.S. Consumer Confidence Index, which shows that a high proportion of U.S. adults aged 18 and older remain worried about their privacy online; and user mistrust and the potential impact on business are growing. The research also shows 72 percent of smartphone users say they are more concerned about privacy on their smartphone than they were one year ago; and 81 percent of smartphone users say they are avoiding applications that they don't believe protect their privacy.
In addition, TRUSTe today concurrently released its 2013 Great Britain Consumer Confidence Index. (See UK release here.) TRUSTe also announced its participation in a series of educational events taking place the week of January 28, 2013, in support of Data Privacy Day.
"With e-commerce booming, and mobile phones predicted to overtake PCs as the most popular way to get online, it's clear that mobile privacy is the latest hot issue for consumers and legislators alike," said Chris Babel, CEO of TRUSTe. "As a Data Privacy Day Champion, TRUSTe will continue to highlight to businesses that they should take consumer privacy concerns seriously and take decisive action to increase consumer confidence online."
Findings from the TRUSTe 2013 U.S. Consumer Confidence Index
Conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of TRUSTe, the 2013 U.S. survey that was fielded online among 2,166 U.S. adults between January 7-9, 2013, shows that overall privacy concerns of U.S. online adults remain high, with 89 percent worrying at least sometimes about their general online privacy compared with 90 percent in 2012 findings(1). However, mistrust and the potential impact on business are increasing. The survey reveals that:
- 43 percent of online U.S. adults (up two percent from Q1 2012) do not trust companies with their personal information; and
- 89 percent of consumers (up one percent from Q1 2012) said that they avoided doing business with companies they do not believe protect their privacy online.
When U.S. online adults were asked in more detail about different types of activities that they are concerned about, online shopping and using social networks topped the list of U.S. online privacy concerns. Specific findings include:
- 89 percent of online shoppers worry about their privacy at least sometimes;
- 87 percent of those who use social networks have concerns at least some of the time; and
- 86 percent of those who bank online are concerned at least some of the time, as well as 77 percent of those who use mobile applications and 82 percent who use e-mail.
Additionally, a majority of U.S. online adults (94 percent) want the ability to control who can collect their personal information and who can track their activities online.

The major cloud platforms defy a simple, side-by-side analysis. Each of the major IaaS public-cloud platforms offers their own unique strengths and functionality. Options for on-site private cloud are diverse as well, and must be designed and deployed while taking existing legacy architecture and infrastructure into account. Then the reality is that most enterprises are embarking on a hybrid cloud strategy and programs. In this Power Panel at 15th Cloud Expo (http://www.CloudComputingExpo.com), moderated by Ashar Baig, Research Director, Cloud, at Gigaom Research, Nate Gordon, Director of T...

Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa, at more than US$500 billion, and ranks 23rd in the world. A recent re-evaluation of Nigeria's true economic size doubled the previous estimate, and brought it well ahead of South Africa, which is a member (unlike Nigeria) of the G20 club for political as well as economic reasons. Nigeria's economy can be said to be quite diverse from one point of view, but heavily dependent on oil and gas at the same time. Oil and natural gas account for about 15% of Nigera's overall economy, but traditionally represent more than 90% of the country's exports and as...

The Internet of Things is a misnomer. That implies that everything is on the Internet, and that simply should not be - especially for things that are blurring the line between medical devices that stimulate like a pacemaker and quantified self-sensors like a pedometer or pulse tracker. The mesh of things that we manage must be segmented into zones of trust for sensing data, transmitting data, receiving command and control administrative changes, and peer-to-peer mesh messaging. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Ryan Bagnulo, Solution Architect / Software Engineer at SOA Software, focused on desi...

Various standards bodies, approaches, and ecosystems are vying for mindshare and positioning for a competitive edge. It is clear that when the dust settles, we will have new protocols, evolved protocols, that will change the way we interact with devices and infrastructure. We will also have evolved web protocols, like HTTP/2, that will be changing the very core of our infrastructures. At the same time, we have old approaches made new again like micro-services...
