Reston, VA, February 07, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Software and Computer Systems Company, LLC (SCSC) has released a major update for their software distributions of both Scannerz and Scannerz Lite. Both products now feature full support for all CoreStorage configurations, Apple RAID, virtually all major hardware RAID units, as well as limited support for third party software RAID implementations. This will allow users to analyze systems using full volume encryption using File Vault 2, perform tests on Fusion Drives, perform tests on multi-volume/drive configurations mapped to a single virtual drive, and test virtually any type of RAID system currently on the market.
"This is a fairly sizable update for us, and we think our approach to analyzing any drive or system related problems will be invaluable to end users," stated an SCSC spokesman. "CoreStorage components typically utilize multiple drives, often an SSD combined with a hard drive to create what appears to the end user to be a single drive. If something goes wrong with the system, the only option currently available with other products is to treat both components as a single entity, with no idea which is problematic. The new releases of Scannerz and Scannerz Lite will expose each CoreStorage component by itself, as well as the combined virtual volume, and allow the end user to test each component and determine which one is being problematic. RAID units will need to be tested as a single entity because of the nature of RAID, particularly striped RAID, but never the less, we now support almost every standard version of RAID available. In addition, a user will be able to test a CoreStorage component directly off the drive without the need for an external, bootable media."
Both Scannerz and Scannerz Lite are capable of detecting both drive errors and irregularities. Irregularities are often detected by weak or failing drive sectors that are missed by other drive testing tools, even though in some cases they may render a system virtually useless. Errors and irregularities may also be caused by other failing system components, such as bad cables, connectors, and logic board faults, and these can be evaluated using the fully featured version of Scannerz in cursory mode using a technique SCSC has termed "path isolation." Scannerz Lite has no option for cursory mode testing and is intended to be used by individuals that simply want to know if their system and drive are functioning properly. The fully featured version of Scannerz also monitors the historical performance of the drive and the system and can report problems in the process of developing before they become serious.
Scannerz for Mac OS X is SCSC's main product and is typically bundled with FSE or FSE-Lite, which are file system event monitors. Scannerz Lite is intended primarily for relatively simple testing of a system and does not come with any file system event monitors and doesn't support cursory mode testing. The current pricing for the products is as follows:
Scannerz with FSE: $44.95
Scannerz with FSE-Lite: $34.95
Scannerz-Lite: $17.95
