Here are the top mobile news and stories of the day.
- Jawbone brings its UP fitness bracelet to Android, returns to Europe – I have a MotoACTV watch (as I’ve written often here), so I like to pay attention to this realm. The first Jawbone UP was a colossal failure, and only worked with iOS devices. Jawbone has now released the Android app, which will substantially increase the attractiveness of the UP. - Google Has No Plans to Merge Android, Chrome OS – “Google chairman Eric Schmidt told reporters in India on Thursday that it will not merge its Android and Chrome Operating systems anytime soon.” While it seems like both are on intersecting paths, Google keeps insisting they will remain separate. I am of the belief that the optimal operating system will have multiple forms, but remain functional and usable across device form factors. Via Mashable, more here.
- Watch every NCAA Tournament buzzer beater with Thuuz Sports app – if you’re a sports fan, March is your favorite time of year. This year, you can use the Thuuz sports app to watch every buzzer beater from the NCAA tournament. Via Phandroid, more here.
- Will the looming $99 tablets threaten iPad market and margins? – Apple’s margins are already hurting by the iPad Mini (which offers far smaller margins than the iPad offered). But those margins were unsustainable over time, as competition forced them to adapt. I think that they will be further undercut by quality low-cost tablets, and will eventually have to address the very real price gap. Via 9to5Mac, more here.
- Amazon Rumored To Be Working On A $99 7-Inch Kindle Fire HD – If Amazon can release the $99 Kindle Fire HD, it will totally change the Android tablet landscape. Right now you can get into the game for $100, but without the quality Amazon would bring to the table. To get the device under $100 would truly provide an offering that would be almost impossible to compete with. Via TechCrunch, more here.
- Inside ‘Apple Anonymous’: The Secret Society of Apple’s Retail Army - This article delves deeper into the cult of Mac’s retail force. There’s an under-the-radar “Apple Anonymous” group that rebels against the Apple company. In it the Apple employees share gripes and issues with Apple as well as funny stories. Via 9to5Mac, more here.
- Wireless ‘under the skin’ prototype implant beams instant blood test read-outs to your smartphone – “A new blood-testing subdermal sensor has been developed by a team of scientists in Switzerland. While that may not sound particularly notable, this half-inch prototype can instantly beam several health metrics to smart devices over Bluetooth, monitoring cholesterol, blood sugar levels as well as the impact of medical treatments like chemotherapy using five built-in sensors.” This sensor could alleviate issues that many ill people have, including diabetics, and those fighting cancer. Tools and capabilities like this are extremely exciting and what make technology so cool. Via Engadget, more here.
