AOL's MediaGlow has announced the launch of the free Pixcetera application on the Apple App Store. The app mirrors the functionality of the Pixcetera.com site, http://www.pixcetera.com, by allowing users to experience amazing photography in a variety of categories, including news, celebrities, lifestyle and nature, right on their iPhone or iPod touch. Key features of the app include high-quality full-screen images in either portrait or landscape, the ability to navigate through thousands of photos with the swipe of a finger, photo sharing, five daily featured galleries, plus thousands of galleries in more than 20 categories.
“We're excited to be using original MediaGlow content to develop compelling iPhone and iPod touch apps focused on the topics users are most passionate about," said Bill Wilson, President of MediaGlow. "Pixcetera and our DailyFinance app are great examples of how we are able to develop applications that expand the interactive and engaging experiences we bring to users on their desktops onto their mobile devices.”
AOL also announced an investment in the development of a series of innovative iPhone and iPod touch applications that will be rolled out throughout 2009. The apps will be specifically designed to enable iPhone and iPod touch users the ability to utilize the best features and innovations of the devices in conjunction with AOL’s original content from its expanded slate of sites.
The availability of the Pixcetera app closely follows the successful launch of the popular AOL DailyFinance app on the App Store. The DailyFinance app is a free, full-service financial portal for iPhone and iPod touch with real-time stock quotes; the ability to create, manage and track multiple portfolios that are synchronized with the AOL web-based portfolio product; fully customizable news with dozens of financial and other topics pulling from more than 3,000 news sources; fully interactive financial charts with one-click comparisons and return percentages over time; global markets tracking; and reporting of top market gainers and losers. The DailyFinance app mirrors portfolios available through DailyFinance.com, http://www.dailyfinance.com.
The Pixcetera and DailyFinance applications are available for free from Apple’s App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.
AOL currently has more than 25 iPhone client and Web applications available, including AOL.com, AIM and AOL Radio, which was a 2008 Apple Design Award winner. The AOL iPhone client applications have been downloaded nearly 14 million times. Earlier this year, AOL launched SHOUTcast, ICQ, AIM (ad-supported and ad-free editions), touchTXT, and Moviefone applications, as well as an update of AOL Radio for the iPhone.
AOL announced the formation of MediaGlow in January 2009, centralizing AOL’s publishing efforts to expand the company’s efforts to reach targeted audiences and further AOL’s global reach. MediaGlow announced plans to launch 30 targeted sites in 2009.
