How to Develop a Web Service for the iPhone
The full AJAX support in the Safari based browser provides the ability to create a mobile experience way beyond WAP

Digg This!

The introduction of the iPhone was marked by huge publicity and the scrambling of all sorts of web services to roll out support for the unique features of the iPhone. The breakthrough browser in the iPhone provides the best mobile browsing experience to date. Not only does it support the multi-touch interface, but the full AJAX support in the Safari based browser provides the ability to create a mobile experience way beyond WAP. The challenge is that the iPhone provided no API, toolkits, or developer tools. So how do you make your normal web or WAP based application suitable for the iPhone.

This session will explore the challenges in adapting to some of the compelling features of the iPhone including,

· Super high resolution screen
· Multi-touch interface o Slide and Pinch movements
· Automatic orientation detection

It will also explore some of the challenges in creating a mobile AJAX application. It’s not the same creating AJAX for a PC based application. There are more browsers, evolving standards on the handsets, carrier considerations, and no standardized application framework. You’ll learn that sometimes you’ll just have to hack. That is, until official APIs are rolled out…please. All these issues were discovered while creating our service SoonR. You’ll get to see examples of all these problems and how we addressed it as we created our iPhone offering.

Speaker Bio:
Song is a Founder and Chief Evangelist at SoonR. Previously he served in executive positions at digital media platform developer Mediabolic (acquired by Macrovision in 2007). He was responsible for defining the award winning M1 platform powering many of today's digital media devices, including the Best of Show at CES (2003). Song has founded three Internet focused companies: PriceRadar, an auction information mining technology, sold to EBAY; Passky, a smartcard based security solution, sold to PubliCard; and, QuickSite, a database driven web site generation tool, sold to Site Technologies. In addition, he served as Director of Marketing at Frame Technology (acquired by Adobe Systems) and held senior product management positions at Borland International. He was part of the team creating category defining products such as Quattro Pro spreadsheet and dBase for Windows relational database system.
